What are the different ways of obtaining feedback from learner?

Encouraging the students to give feedback is as important as giving feedback to the students. It really helps the teacher in sitting back and judge her work as well as to have a walk through the strategies that she has used in her classroom. Moreover it is a tool to evaluate the task and measure the outcome as it is given by the students to whom we are conveying knowledge. At the same time it assist us in planning the class more effectively using the strategies that they suggested that went well. In addition to this it makes the task of the teacher easier because it in turn helps her to keep her class enthusiastic, fun filled and controlled through which children gain maximum information.

A good technique of finding out what the learner think is by asking them to reflect on what they have been doing and what they have been learning through fun.

There are many ways through which we can obtain feedback from the students:

Getting written feedback

Its like a questionnaire given to the children in which they will write down all the answers based on what we need to get from them like the topic they enjoyed, the activities that they like, the learning strategies used in the class and so on. This evaluation can be done at the end of each topic.

Use Mid -term student feedback

This is an effective way where the children will discuss in group on about the strengths of the course and any changes that would assist their learning. Here consultants are arranged who will observe the class for 25minutes then the teacher leaves the class with the consultants then they give a sheet where the children have to discuss and fill in. this is done after the consultants brief the children on the purpose of the feedback.

Topic evaluation forms

This method is used where the children will have to mention in brief about each topics as a part of the unit review. They can answer a few questions like what’s the topic that they liked the most, the difficult one, the ways you suggest to convey the topic better and so on.

Questioning and listening skills

To be a good listener is the priority when encouraging the learner to give feedback through questioning.

·       Use open ended questioning

·       Use follow up questions to probe deeper understanding.

·       Use close questions to confirm agreement.

Learner satisfaction survey

This is a systematic way of understanding the learners’ experiences which will enhance the teacher to improve the methods of teaching in order to respond better to learners’ needs.

Open communication channels eg: suggestion boxes

A very helpful way to help those students who hesitate to give open comments.

Consultation on specific topics

This is to gauge and develop ideas to improve and help the learners to grasp information better.

Forming learner groups to shadow decision making bodies

This method helps the learner to provide real input into the main decision making groups in the organisation.
